The PD Sabre3 is the successor to the long-running Sabre2, designed from a clean slate following extensive feedback from skydivers who had used the earlier model for nearly two decades. It was introduced to carry forward the positive traits of the Sabre2, such as strong landings and versatility, while resolving its drawbacks like off-heading openings and occasional end-cell closure. The Sabre3 entered the market in the early 2020s as Performance Designs' modern 9-cell all-around canopy, intended to replace the Sabre2 and serve as a higher-performance option for a wide range of sport jumpers.

It is a 9-cell canopy with a fully elliptical planform. The design incorporates tail ribs extending toward the trailing edge to improve toggle and riser efficiency. The standard top and bottom skins are made of ZP fabric, with a variety of line options depending on size and jumper preference. Smaller sizes (89–150 sq ft) are normally set up with 700 HMA, while larger models use heavier 1000 HMA or Vectran for durability.

PD introduced alternating silver and white line tabs to make flaking the canopy easier for novice packers. They also added snaps (previously reserved to the Horizon and Valkyrie) to hold the slider in place until deployment. These snaps are said to help prevent hard opening.

The Sabre3 is aimed at intermediate to advanced skydivers who want a canopy that balances everyday usability with higher performance potential. At conservative wing loadings it can be flown by less experienced jumpers stepping up from student gear, but its design rewards pilots with good canopy skills. It is also suited to those working on canopy piloting and swooping, where riser control, recovery arc, and speed management are essential.

Openings on the Sabre3 are smoother and more progressive than on the Sabre2, with less tendency to dive or go off-heading. It has a steeper glide than many other 9-cells in its class and a long recovery arc, especially at higher wing loadings. Front risers produce a strong, efficient dive, while rear risers provide reliable drive and control when returning from a long spot or flying into wind. Toggle input is crisp and responsive, with a more linear feel across the control range. The bottom-end flare is powerful, supporting strong landings when executed with proper timing.

Compared to the Sabre2, the Sabre3 offers more consistent on-heading openings, improved riser performance, and stronger flare. It is steeper and more aggressive in flight, but can also be flown more conservatively depending on size and wing loading. Within the Performance Designs lineup it fills the role of a versatile 9-cell that bridges the gap between forgiving all-rounders like the Spectre and dedicated high-performance wings.
